The CyFi project is an experiment. The covid pandemic has hit musicians and singers hard. As you no doubt know, it is impossible to play across the Internet using Zoom and other video/audio conferencing tools. There is just too much sound delay. We have been unable to rehearse, let alone perform, for several months. I, for one, am desperate to start playing again.
When I heard about the Jacktrip project, developed by Stanford many years ago, I became obsessed with this technology. It is a software app that collects audio streams from multiple players, adjusting for latency, and sends the cumulative audio back to each player. With the proper hardware, sound latency is at a minimum and lo and behold, the music is in sync. It is not a perfect technology. There is a physical distance limit (500 miles? Maybe more?). We will be working to determine where CyFi servers can be located to maximize distance. Hardware must be decent. Internet upload and download speeds must be decent.
We have spent the last three months trying out different combinations and different versions of this technology. Finally we have a combination of hardware and software that really seems to work. We have bundled this up in a little box that we call CyFi Live.
CyFi Live consists of a Raspberry Pi computer board and a Hifiberry sound card bundled up in a little wooden box customized by Gateley Designs. It is running the Jamulus connection app with a Jack controller. The musician plugs a microphone (dynamic) and headphones into this box. Then connect the box to the Internet via an ethernet cable (no wifi - it is too slow). Turn on the box and you are instantly plugged into a private music network. Your musical compatriots simply turn on their box also and voila! You can rehearse and even perform. This is audio only, but you can easily add a Zoom session for video. And yes, you can pipe the CyFi combined audio right into Zoom for a live concert.
This is a cottage industry attempt to help out our musicians. The project is being funded by Cykic Software, Inc., a software and web development company. There is no intention of going "big time". We are trying to pass on these boxes at our own cost. Boxes are customized for each user. We will be there to hold your hand throughout this process. This technology is not a polished deal - there may be issues we need to hammer out. But if you are a singer or musician chomping at the bit to sing or play, please fill out our contact form and let's see what we can do.
